Notes: The story behind the photograph:

I have long been an advocate for our homeless, crisscrossing the country creating photo documentaries to help educate others about the circumstances of those who live on our streets. I have known Trey, the subject of this image, for several years. He lives in an alley behind 6th street in Austin, Texas. After having not seen him for more than a year because of the pandemic, I headed to Austin to see how he and several others were doing. He was clearly thinner, tumors protruding on his spine from sleeping on concrete. We were walking on the sidewalk on 6th street which was covered in murals, the result of the BLM protests from the summer before. He stopped in front of the mural you see in the background and said, "I hate my life. If I could peel my skin off, I would. I hate being black." This photograph was my attempt to capture the extraordinary emotional and physical pain that he endures.
